Today, House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerrold Nadler (D-NY) delivered the following opening statement for the markup of H.R. 1112, the Enhanced Background Checks Act:

"H.R. 1112, the 'Enhanced Background Checks Act,' addresses a dangerous shortcoming in the current firearms background check law. This loophole enables, in certain cases, firearms to be transferred by licensed gun dealers before the required background checks have been completed.

Today, House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerrold Nadler (D-NY) sent a letter to Acting Attorney General Matthew G. Whitaker, requesting that he clarify statements he made during his testimony before the House Judiciary Committee on February 8, 2019.

"Today, the Judiciary Committee considers H.R. 8, the 'Bipartisan Background Checks Act of 2019.' This is long-overdue legislation that will help address our national crisis of gun violence.

Today, House Judiciary Chairman Jerrold Nadler (D-NY) delivered the following opening statement, as prepared, during a Department of Justice oversight hearing with Acting Attorney General Matthew G. Whitaker:

"Mr. Whitaker, I want to begin my remarks by commending the tradition of independent law enforcement at the Department of Justice. As you and I both know, it is the career officials at the Department, the FBI, and the US Attorney's Offices whose commitment to the rule of law protects our democracy.

Today, at a press conference in support of H.R. 8, the Bipartisan Background Checks Act, House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerrold Nadler (D-NY) announced that the House Judiciary Committee will markup the Bipartisan Background Checks Act on February 13, 2019.

H.R. 8, the Bipartisan Background Checks Act of 2019, requires background checks on all firearm sales. Bill text is available here.
