Opening Statement
Today, Congressman Jerrold Nadler (D-NY), Ranking Member of the House Judiciary Committee, delivered the following opening statement, as prepared, for the House Judiciary Committee Hearing, "Collusion in the Global Alliance for Responsible Media":
"Mr. Chairman, this hearing has nothing to do with antitrust law, since the Majority's allegations wither under even the most basic antitrust analysis. This is, instead, another dangerous effort by the Majority to bully companies into promoting and supporting far-right extremist views-views that brands, understandably, do not want to be associated with.
WASHINGTON, DC - Today, Ranking Member Jerrold Nadler (D-NY) delivered the following floor statement, as prepared, in opposition to the resolution to hold Attorney General Merrick Garland in contempt of Congress:
"M_. Speaker, the Judiciary Committee, under Republican control, has spent the last 18 months, and twenty million taxpayer dollars, in a desperate search to find something-anything-that they can use to damage President Biden and to protect Donald Trump.
"Mr. Chairman, here we are again marking up a bill that is another attempt by the majority to scapegoat and fearmonger about immigrants. Despite its title, this bill will impact not only those who are undocumented, but also lawful permanent residents, or green card holders.
Today, Ranking Member Jerrold Nadler delivered the following opening statement, as prepared, for the House Judiciary Committee Markup of H.R. 8296, The GAO Database Modernization Act:
"Mr. Chairman, the GAO Database Modernization Act would amend the Congressional Review Act to require federal agencies to report to the Government Accountability Office, or GAO, certain information about agency rules that are made ineffective due to an agency action or other reason.
WASHINGTON, DC - Today, Ranking Member Jerrold Nadler (D-NY) delivered the following opening statement, as prepared, for the House Judiciary Committee Markup of the Report Recommending U.S. Attorney General Merrick B. Garland for Contempt of Congress:
"Twenty Million Taxpayer Dollars.
Chairman Jordan, who consistently opposes government spending on everything from feeding children to education and healthcare, has spent $20 million taxpayer dollars this Congress to investigate his various conspiracy theories.
And what exactly has he delivered to the American people on their $20 million investment?
Nothing.
Today, Ranking Member Jerrold Nadler (D-NY) delivered the following statement on the House Floor, as prepared, in opposition to H. Res. 1210, "Condemn Biden Border Crisis and Impact on Law Enforcement":
"M_. Speaker, my Republican colleagues like to talk a big game when it comes to immigration and border security. They have a long list of grievances against the Biden Administration and a lot of tough talk about what should be done. But when it comes to actually doing something about it-doing the hard work of legislating and finding meaningful solutions to real problems-that is where they come up empty.
Today, Ranking Member Jerrold Nadler (D-NY) delivered the following opening statement, as prepared, for the House Judiciary Subcommittee on the Constitution and Limited Government Hearing on "Antisemitism on College Campuses":
"Mr. Chairman, I have devoted much of my life to combatting antisemitism, and I am as attuned as anyone to threats and bigotry aimed at Jewish people. I will take lectures from no one about the need for vigorous efforts to fight antisemitism on campus or anywhere else.
Today, Ranking Member Jerrold Nadler (D-NY) delivered the following opening statement, as prepared, for the House Judiciary Markup of H.R. 354, the "LEOSA Reform Act"
"Mr. Chairman, the LEOSA Reform Act would remove critical gun safety protections from the Law Enforcement Officer Safety Act, or LEOSA, which became law in 2004. To understand just how problematic this bill is, it is helpful to revisit a little bit of history from this Committee's past.
Today, Ranking Member Jerrold Nadler (D-NY) delivered the following opening statement, as prepared, for the House Judiciary Subcommittee on Courts, Intellectual Property, and the Internet Hearing on "Intellectual Property: Enforcement Activities by the Executive Branch":
"Mr. Chairman, today, the Majority has insisted that we go to Philadelphia, the fourth stop in a tour of cities that Republicans have selected as they try to distract from the fact that they have no meaningful solutions to make our country safer. Instead, they have repeatedly focused Committee activities on vilifying immigrants, dismantling commonsense gun laws, and pursuing wild conspiracy theories for which they have found no evidence.
"Thank you, Mr. Chairman, for convening this important hearing. Roughly a decade ago, we learned through this Committee's bipartisan Overcriminalization Task Force-of which I was a member-that there are simply too many federal criminal laws on the books, that their reach is often too broad, and that too many individuals are jailed for far too long because of them.
Today, Ranking Member Jerrold Nadler (D-NY) delivered the following opening statement, as prepared, for the House Judiciary Committee Markup of H.R. 4961, the "Ensuring Justice for Victims of Terrorism Act":
"Mr. Chairman, I was proud to join the Gentleman from New Jersey, Mr. Van Drew, in introducing the Ensuring Justice for Victims of Terrorism Act. This bipartisan legislation would make three technical corrections to the Justice Against Sponsors of Terrorism Act, or JASTA, to ensure that foreign state actors cannot exploit ambiguities or drafting errors in the original law to evade justice.

I appreciate the chairman's efforts to address many of the concerns that I have with H.R. 9 in his manager's amendment. Unfortunately, the amendment does not go far enough to gain my support for the underlying bill.

The Judiciary Committee has a central role in studying the issue of net neutrality and, more generally, competition on the Internet. [I yield myself such time as I may consume]
M. Speaker –
