National Security
The Judiciary Committee oversees many of the laws, agencies, and programs that underpin our national security infrastructure. Whether debating the constitutional limits of executive power, examining the application of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act, or evaluating counterterrorism efforts at the Department of Justice and the FBI, the Committee is working to ensure that the government keeps Americans safe-and does so in a way that respects our civil liberties and reflects our values.

House Judiciary Committee Ranking Member John Conyers, Jr. (D-MI) today released the following statement:
"After listening to comments from President Trump and Attorney General Sessions, I have the following concerns:
After President Donald Trump and House Republicans' calls to investigate leaks of classified information, all House Judiciary Committee Democrats, led by House Judiciary Committee Ranking Member John Conyers, Jr. (D-MI) and Congressman Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY), today wrote to the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) Inspector General to call for an investigation into potential Trump Administration threats to whistleblowers. The letter also requests the DOJ Inspector General to investigate potential conflicts of interest that may arise with U.S.
Thank you, Mr. Chairman. The "Authorization and Oversight Plan" before us this morning is not binding on the Committee. It is, instead, an informal outline of our oversight priorities for the Congress to come.
Mr. Chairman, I want you to know that I have always appreciated both your effort-and that of your staff-to reach consensus on the Committee's oversight plan. Unfortunately, I fear that there are several urgent matters within our jurisdiction that will not be discussed on a timely basis if we do not bring them up today.
Today, every Democratic Member of both the House Judiciary Committee and the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee wrote to U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions and FBI Director James Comey requesting a full briefing in regards to former National Security Agency Director Michael Flynn's communications with Russian officials and any knowledge or involvement others in the Trump Administration may have had concerning these communications.
Today, Rep. John Conyers, Jr. (D-MI), Ranking Member on the House Judiciary Committee, and Rep. Elijah E. Cummings (D-MD), Ranking Member on the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, issued the following joint statement:
More than 100 Members of the U.S. House of Representatives, led by House Judiciary Committee Member Pramila Jayapal (D-WA), House Judiciary Committee Ranking Member John Conyers, Jr. (D-MI), and House Judiciary Subcommittee on Immigration and Border Security Ranking Member Zoe Lofgren (D-CA), wrote to the Secretary of Homeland Security John F. Kelly condemning the President's Muslim ban executive order and calling for a full Member-wide briefing no later than Friday, February 3, 2017.
