Today, the House Judiciary Committee held a hearing on H.R. 3179, the "Marketplace Equity Act of 2011." This legislative hearing was a follow-up to the oversight hearing on the "Constitutional Limitations on States' Authority to Collect Sales Taxes in E-Commerce" on November 30, 2011. Ranking Member John Conyers, Jr. (D-Mich.) is the longest standing member of the Judiciary Committee to work on the issue of sales tax fairness, having worked alongside Representatives Bill Delahunt and Spencer Bachus since 2000. Yesterday, the Subcommittee on the Constitution held a hearing on "H.J. Res. 110, an Amendment to the Constitution Concerning Parental Rights and Education." In numerous cases, the Supreme Court has long recognized the relationship between parent and child as a fundamental right. H.J. Res. 110 would not provide any additional protections or recognition not already afforded to this important bond by the Supreme Court. (DETROIT)-Today, House Judiciary Committee Ranking Member John Conyers, Jr. (D-Mich.) joined Acting U.S. Commerce Secretary Rebecca Blank for the opening of the Elijah J. McCoy United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) satellite office in Detroit, Michigan. This is the first ever USPTO satellite office. The office will directly create more than 100 new jobs with the potential to spur the creation of more high tech jobs in the region. Today on the floor, House Judiciary Committee Ranking Member John Conyers, Jr. (D-Mich.) voted against H.R. 6079, the "Repeal Obamacare Act." During debate over the measure, Ranking Member Conyers lead Judiciary Democrats in opposition to the bill. This marks the 31st time House Republican leadership has held a vote on legislation to repeal the Affordable Care Act, which created landmark new protections for America's families and will extend health care coverage to over 30 million Americans.

Today, House Judiciary Committee Ranking Member John Conyers, Jr. (D-Mich.) praised the policy announced by Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano that grants immigration officials the discretion to defer deportation action against certain young undocumented immigrants. These same individuals would also be allowed to apply for work permits. Only individuals who meet certain criteria would be eligible for consideration under the announced policy. Eligible individuals must show that they came to the U.S.
