(DETROIT)-Today, House Judiciary Committee Ranking Member John Conyers, Jr. (D-Mich.) joined Acting U.S. Commerce Secretary Rebecca Blank for the opening of the Elijah J. McCoy United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) satellite office in Detroit, Michigan. This is the first ever USPTO satellite office. The office will directly create more than 100 new jobs with the potential to spur the creation of more high tech jobs in the region. Also invited to attend the opening ceremony were U.S. Senators Carl Levin and Debbie Stabenow, U.S.

Today on the floor, House Judiciary Committee Ranking Member John Conyers, Jr. (D-Mich.) voted against H.R. 6079, the "Repeal Obamacare Act." During debate over the measure, Ranking Member Conyers lead Judiciary Democrats in opposition to the bill. This marks the 31st time House Republican leadership has held a vote on legislation to repeal the Affordable Care Act, which created landmark new protections for America's families and will extend health care coverage to over 30 million Americans.

Yesterday, the Committee on the Judiciary's Subcommittee on Crime, Terrorism, and Homeland Security, held a hearing on "Identity Theft and Income Tax Preparation Fraud." The Subcommittee heard testimony from several witnesses, including Mr. Michael Robinson, a victim of tax fraud. United States, which held unconstitutional several key provisions of Arizona's immigration law S.B. 1070, and upheld the preeminence of the federal government in determining immigration law and policy.

Today, House Judiciary Committee Ranking Member John Conyers, Jr. (D-Mich.) praised the policy announced by Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano that grants immigration officials the discretion to defer deportation action against certain young undocumented immigrants. These same individuals would also be allowed to apply for work permits. Only individuals who meet certain criteria would be eligible for consideration under the announced policy. Eligible individuals must show that they came to the U.S.

Today, House Judiciary Committee Ranking Member John Conyers (D-Mich.) hosted Dr. Olivia Hooker, a survivor of the Tulsa-Greenwood Race Riot of 1921 and a notable professor and the first African American woman to enlist in the United States Coast Guard. Dr. Hooker, along with Harvard Law Professor Charles Ogletree met with members of Congress to reflect on the 91st anniversary of the riot, and to discuss proposals before Congress that address the need for reconciliation and justice for the aging survivors.

Today, House Judiciary Committee Ranking Member John Conyers, Jr. (D-Mich.) opposed H.R. 3541, the "Prenatal Nondiscrimination Act of 2012." Formerly known as the "Susan B. Anthony and Frederick Douglass Prenatal Nondiscrimination Act," the bill jeopardizes women's access to safe, legal medical care and undermines the constitutional right to privacy guaranteed by Roe v. Wade.
