Today, House Judiciary Committee Ranking Member John Conyers Jr. (D-MI.) delivered the following remarks on the House Floor during the debate of H.R. 469 the Sunshine for Regulations and Regulatory Decrees and Settlements Act of 2017.
H.R. 732, the "Stop Settlement Slush Funds Act of 2017," would prohibit the federal government from entering into or enforcing any settlement agreement requiring donations to remediate harms that are not "directly and proximately" caused by a wrongdoer's unlawful conduct.
I oppose H.R. 732 for several reasons.
H.R. 4092, the "Agricultural Guestworker Act," is yet the latest attempt by the Majority to address one aspect of our Nation's broken immigration system. And, on at least two prior occasions, our Committee has considered previous iterations of this legislation.
