Today, Ranking Member Jerrold Nadler (D-NY) delivered the following opening statement, as prepared, for the House Judiciary Subcommittee on the Constitution and Limited Government Hearing on "Antisemitism on College Campuses":
"Mr. Chairman, I have devoted much of my life to combatting antisemitism, and I am as attuned as anyone to threats and bigotry aimed at Jewish people. I will take lectures from no one about the need for vigorous efforts to fight antisemitism on campus or anywhere else.
Today, Ranking Member Jerrold Nadler (D-NY) delivered the following opening statement, as prepared, for the House Judiciary Markup of H.R. 354, the "LEOSA Reform Act"
"Mr. Chairman, the LEOSA Reform Act would remove critical gun safety protections from the Law Enforcement Officer Safety Act, or LEOSA, which became law in 2004. To understand just how problematic this bill is, it is helpful to revisit a little bit of history from this Committee's past.
Today, Ranking Member Jerrold Nadler (D-NY) delivered the following opening statement, as prepared, for the House Judiciary Subcommittee on Courts, Intellectual Property, and the Internet Hearing on "Intellectual Property: Enforcement Activities by the Executive Branch":
"Mr. Chairman, today, the Majority has insisted that we go to Philadelphia, the fourth stop in a tour of cities that Republicans have selected as they try to distract from the fact that they have no meaningful solutions to make our country safer. Instead, they have repeatedly focused Committee activities on vilifying immigrants, dismantling commonsense gun laws, and pursuing wild conspiracy theories for which they have found no evidence.
"Thank you, Mr. Chairman, for convening this important hearing. Roughly a decade ago, we learned through this Committee's bipartisan Overcriminalization Task Force-of which I was a member-that there are simply too many federal criminal laws on the books, that their reach is often too broad, and that too many individuals are jailed for far too long because of them.
For too long, Congress-under both parties-has created new offenses or expanded existing laws in response to a national crisis, daily headlines, or highly publicized tragedies-often federalizing crimes traditionally prosecuted in states-without inquiry into whether the federal government should be involved at all.
Today, Ranking Member Jerrold Nadler (D-NY) delivered the following opening statement, as prepared, for the House Judiciary Committee Markup of H.R. 4961, the "Ensuring Justice for Victims of Terrorism Act":
"Mr. Chairman, I was proud to join the Gentleman from New Jersey, Mr. Van Drew, in introducing the Ensuring Justice for Victims of Terrorism Act. This bipartisan legislation would make three technical corrections to the Justice Against Sponsors of Terrorism Act, or JASTA, to ensure that foreign state actors cannot exploit ambiguities or drafting errors in the original law to evade justice.
Today, Ranking Member Jerrold Nadler (D-NY) delivered the following statement on the House Floor, as prepared, in support of H.R. 4639, the "Fourth Amendment is Not for Sale Act":
"Mr. Chairman, I rise in strong support of H.R. 4639, the "Fourth Amendment Is Not for Sale Act." I was proud to join Congressman Davidson in introducing this strong bipartisan legislation to help prevent government overreach by prohibiting the warrantless purchase of customer data. When the Judiciary Committee considered this bill at markup last July, it received a rare unanimous 30-to-zero vote.
Today, House Judiciary Committee Ranking Member Jerrold Nadler and Representative Joaquin Castro (D-TX) sent a letter to the Chief Executive Officers of the Walt Disney Company, Warner Bros. Discovery, and FOX, seeking more information about the companies' new joint sports streaming venture ("JV"). The unnamed JV, which was announced in February and is expected to debut this fall, unites the three most dominant programmers in the sports streaming space, which collectively own the rights to 80 percent of all sports streaming content.
Today, Ranking Member Jerrold Nadler (D-NY) delivered the following opening statement, as prepared, for the House Judiciary Constitution and Limited Government Subcommittee Hearing on "Liberty, Tyranny, and Accountability: COVID-19 and the Constitution":
"Mr. Chairman, our former colleague, and current Ambassador to Japan, Rahm Emmanuel, is often quoted as saying "You never want a serious crisis to go to waste." I believe that my Republican colleagues think that this idea applies to the topic of today's hearing.
WASHINGTON, DC - Today, Ranking Member Jerrold Nadler (D-NY) delivered the following floor statement, as prepared, for the House debate on H.R. 7888, the "Reforming Intelligence and Securing America Act":
"M. Chairman, I rise in strong support of meaningful reform to FISA Section 702 and in strong opposition to a mere fig leaf or-even worse-an expansion of 702.
Unfortunately, we will not know which of these paths we are taking until the conclusion of this debate.
