Ranking Member Raskin’s Statement on Supreme Court Decision Permitting Trump’s Mass Firings Across Federal Agencies to Move Forward

July 9, 2025

Washington, D.C. (July 9, 2025)—Today, Rep. Jamie Raskin, Ranking Member of the House Committee on the Judiciary, issued the following statement on the Supreme Court’s decision to lift a lower court order that had temporarily paused President Donald Trump’s plans to fire thousands of federal workers and dismantle federal agencies:

“This Supreme Court ruling may give Trump’s team big ideas about unleashing their wrecking ball on even more federal departments, but they should think long and hard about it. We’ve already seen the profound damage done when they clear the FAA of air traffic controllers, the National Weather Service of regional and local meteorologists, NOAA of climate scientists, the Forest Service of firefighters and NIH of cancer researchers. The MAGA/DOGE purge of the federal civil service poses a clear and present danger to tens of millions of our people.

“Moreover, as bad as the Court’s decision was, it did not approve any particular plan attacking a specific department or agency. So we will be there to fight them every step of the way. No president has the constitutional authority to tear down the civil service system or our government agencies by mere executive whim. House Democrats will continue to fight this lawless onslaught against Congressional power, our people and our civil servants—in Congress, in the courts, and in the streets every day with the American people.”
