Ranking Member Jamie Raskin’s Statement on Republicans’ Authorization of Another Jan. 6 Select Subcommittee

September 3, 2025

Washington, D.C. (September 3, 2025)—Today, Rep. Jamie Raskin, Ranking Member of the House Judiciary Committee, released the following statement after House Republicans snuck into a procedural vote language to authorize another Select Subcommittee to investigate Jan. 6, 2021:

“We welcome yet another chance to remind Americans of House Republicans’ ongoing complicity with—and embarrassing apologetics for—MAGA’s violent insurrection against Congress and Vice-President Mike Pence and Trump’s sinister attempt to overthrow a presidential election which he lost to President Biden by more than 7 million votes, 306-232 in the Electoral College.

“I’m not sure why House Republicans keep picking the scab of their massive self-inflicted political wound and abject surrender to Donald Trump. They haven’t laid a glove on a single fact presented in the Report of the Select Committee on January 6 and all of their surreal counter-theories—‘it was really ANTIFA! It was really the FBI!’—are gone with the wind. But their determination to return to the scene of thousands of crimes committed by Proud Boys, Oath Keepers, 3%ers and other MAGA accomplices gives us a chance to teach young Americans about the dangers of political and religious cults and authoritarian leaders.

“We will also demand that this forum become a time of national reckoning with the fact that 140 of our police officers were wounded, injured, hospitalized and disabled by the savagery of Trump’s mob. Speaker Johnson and Donald Trump have done absolutely zippo for our officers and won’t even put up the federally mandated plaque in Congress to honor their service and sacrifice. Trump pardoned nearly 1600 insurrectionists and violent cop-beaters, many of whom have already re-offended, and calls them heroes. What has he done for our brave officers who defended our country and our constitution against his insurrectionist mob? Nothing. So we’ll have a chance to talk about that.

“We will also have the chance with the new Select Subcommittee to examine the constantly growing criminal records of all the hundreds of violent felons, cop-beaters and white nationalists who Donald Trump pardonedand released onto our streets on his first day in office.

“So we thank MAGA for this excellent opportunity. It would be better to work on a common agenda for actual progress in America but they plainly are not interested in that.”
