Conyers Commemorates 40th Anniversary of Roe v. Wade Decision

Washington, DC, January 23, 2013

On January 22, 1973, the United States Supreme Court delivered its landmark decision in Roe v. Wade, affirming the constitutional protection right of women to determine their own personal health care choices without undue government influence.  Congressman John Conyers, Jr. (D-Mich.) issued this statement to mark the historic anniversary:

“40 years ago the Supreme Court decision in Roe v. Wade affirmed the right of women to make their own healthcare decisions.

“The decision in Roe v. Wade should have closed the chapter on compromising women’s health and autonomy.  Unfortunately, it did not.  We must not let unconstitutional legislation at the federal and state levels roll back the protections spelled out in this Supreme Court decision.  The legislative time and resources available to Congress should be used constructively to devise positive measures for women and their families.

“Protecting women and promoting equality should not be partisan issues.  As we celebrate the 40th Anniversary of Roe v. Wade, all Americans should strive to further these goals.”
