House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerrold Nadler (D-NY) released the following statement after House passage of H.R. 8, the Bipartisan Background Checks Act of 2019: “When Democrats gained control of the House we promised the American people that Congress would take steps to reduce gun violence. Today we were able to make good on that promise by passing H.R. 8, legislation to require background checks on all firearm sales. I commend Reps. Mike Thompson and Peter King for their efforts to advance this legislation. “Almost 25 years to the day after the Brady Act was first implemented, expanding our current background check system is one of the steps we must take to address the gun violence crisis in America. H.R. 8 will expand background checks to help ensure guns do not end up in the wrong hands. I urge my colleagues in the Senate to pass this legislation expeditiously so that it can become the law of the land.” |
