Following the Senate vote to proceed with debate on the USA Freedom Act (H.R. 2048), House Judiciary Committee Chairman Bob Goodlatte (R-Va.), House Judiciary Committee Ranking Member John Conyers (D-Mich.), Crime, Terrorism, Homeland Security, and Investigations Subcommittee Chairman Jim Sensenbrenner (R-Wis.), and Courts, Intellectual Property and the Internet Ranking Member Jerrold Nadler (D-N.Y.) issued the following joint statement:

“We are pleased that the Senate has acted wisely to proceed with debate on the USA Freedom Act. This decision is long overdue. However, we are disappointed that the Senate has stalled debate on this strong, bipartisan bill and will not vote on it tonight. Because of Senate’s irresponsible inaction, three national security provisions will expire at midnight. We urge the Senate to act as expeditiously as possible to approve the USA Freedom Act, without amendment and without delay, so that we protect Americans’ civil liberties and our national security.”
