Ranking Member Raskin’s Statement on Trump’s Retaliatory Attack on Harvard’s Independence

Washington, May 22, 2025

Washington, D.C. (May 22, 2025)—Today, Rep. Jamie Raskin, Ranking Member of the House Committee on the Judiciary, issued the following statement on President Donald Trump’s weaponization of the federal government against Harvard University:

“For many decades, Harvard has brought brilliant young people from around the world to the United States, where they have contributed to American global leadership in research, technology and innovation.

“By revoking Harvard’s ability to enroll international students in a fit of pique and retaliatory vengeance against its refusal to let him run their University, President Trump is now effectively ordering Harvard to expel 27% of its student body, an unprecedented assault on American higher education. Trump is telling the world that its best and brightest are no longer welcome here and that they should fear the vindictive irrationality of American politicians.

“By calling his move a ‘warning to all universities,’ the Administration has laid bare Trump’s desire to bully and intimidate colleges and universities into becoming obedient agents of his gangster state instead of being institutions of truth, discovery and intellectual progress.

“These actions are plainly authoritarian, unlawful and dangerous. This assault on our essential constitutional values will not stand.”
