Ranking Member Raskin’s Statement on Special Counsel David Weiss’s Report on Hunter Biden Investigation

Washington, January 13, 2025
Washington, D.C. (January 13, 2025)—Today, Rep. Jamie Raskin, Ranking Member of the House Judiciary Committee, released the following statement after the Department of Justice (DOJ) released Special Counsel David Weiss’s report on Hunter Biden:

“Special Counsel David Weiss—who was unimpeded by political interference despite the extraordinary nature of his investigation into a sitting President’s son—publicly issued a final report on his investigation into Hunter Biden and his tax and gun-related offenses. Much to my Republican colleagues’ dismay, this report—the result of a 6-year investigation led by a Trump-appointed U.S. Attorney who was hand-picked by Attorney General Barr for the job—is just more proof that their effort to impeach President Biden was totally outlandish, baseless and partisan.

“Weiss’s report sets forth more evidence that the GOP’s madcap impeachment drive was based on outrageous lies and bogus claims spread by Russian intelligence. Alexander Smirnov, a former FBI informant with extensive ties to Russian intelligence, provided a fraudulent story about President Biden and his son Hunter accepting bribes that was at the very ‘heart’ of the Republicans’ impeachment crusade against President Biden and their effort to hold FBI Director Christopher Wray in contempt of Congress. It’s time for Republicans to stop aiding Vladimir Putin, the former KGB foreign intelligence officer, by repeating and amplifying Russian state propaganda and disinformation. Spare us the tired cries of ‘Russia, Russia, Russia,’ and just read the report.

“I urge the Department of Justice to continue making all Special Counsel reports available to the public in the spirit of the Department’s strong commitment to independence and transparency. The taxpayers paid for these reports and the taxpayers should be able to read them.”
