Ranking Member Nadler Statement on Nomination of Rep. Matt Gaetz as U.S. Attorney General

Washington, November 13, 2024

Today, U.S. Representative Jerrold Nadler, Ranking Member of the House Judiciary Committee, issued the following statement:

“If there were any lingering questions of the direction Donald Trump will take our country, look no further than the nomination of Matt Gaetz as United States Attorney General.

“As both Chair and Ranking Member of the House Judiciary Committee, I’ve had a front-row seat to Mr. Gaetz’s antics.  For eight years, Gaetz has defended Trump—through Trump’s 34 felonies, his confirmed sexual abuse against E. Jean Carroll, his gross mishandling of classified documents, and his instigating a riot at the Capitol.  For this blind loyalty, Trump has rewarded Gaetz by nominating him as Attorney General.

“I have no doubt that Gaetz will execute Trump’s plans to weaponize the federal government to punish his political enemies.

“Like many of Trump’s picks, Gaetz is woefully unqualified to be Attorney General.  He has no executive experience and no experience as a prosecutor at any level of government. With no prosecutorial experience of his own, Gaetz’s longest time with a prosecutor was likely during his own sex trafficking investigation involving allegations with a minor.

"Last I checked, a federal investigation into your wildly suspect behavior does not make you qualified to run the Department of Justice.

"He is totally and completely unfit to serve as the chief law enforcement officer of the United States.

“As the leader of the House Judiciary Committee Democrats, I will stand firm against a Gaetz DOJ and lead the charge against his efforts to weaponize the Department.”
