Nadler Commends Senate Passage of Respect for Marriage Act

Washington, November 29, 2022
WASHINGTON, D.C.—House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerrold Nadler (D-NY) today issued the following statement after the Senate passed his Respect for Marriage Act (HR 8404):

“Today we take another monumental step in our decades long fight to protect same-sex and interracial marriage,” said Chairman Nadler. “I first filed the Respect for Marriage Act 13 years ago, when doing so wasn’t particularly popular, even within my own party. But thanks to the courage and determination of the countless advocates who have fought tirelessly for decades, we are on the cusp of a historic victory that will repeal the discriminatory Defense of Marriage Act and provide certainty and stability to the families who have been shaken to their core by this conservative Supreme Court.

“I want to thank and congratulate Leader Schumer, Senator Baldwin and Senator Feinstein for their hard work in accomplishing a feat few thought was possible. I look forward to getting this bill passed through the House again quickly and onto President Biden’s desk.”
