WASHINGTON, D.C.—House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerrold Nadler (D-NY) today issued the following statement on the Supreme Court Families Security Act (HR7712), introduced by Rep. Greg Stanton (D-AZ), which would enable the Marshal of the Supreme Court to authorize security for the immediate families of the justices, as well as court employees, including clerks:
 
“We already have multiple reports that activists are targeting Supreme Court clerks and their families, so it seems critical to provide protection for the families of both the justices and of the people who work for them. Rep. Stanton gets at precisely that problem with his Supreme Court Families Security Act. The Committee is willing to work with Senator Cornyn to make sure everyone who needs it gets an extra measure of security—but we are not willing to abandon the clerks and their families.
 
“Thankfully, Supreme Court justices and staff already receive protection from the Marshal of the Supreme Court under a bipartisan law introduced by Rep. Stanton.  The Supreme Court Families Security Act will authorize the Marshal to provide protection to their families, as well.
 
“There is nothing partisan about wanting to protect the families of everyone at the Supreme Court.  But there is something very wrong with deliberately excluding the Court’s employees from those protections, especially when they and their families are being targeted by extremists. No one should play politics with the safety of the families of the people who work at the Supreme Court, but that seems to be what is happening here.”
