Chairman Nadler Statement on Immigration Provisions in the Build Back Better Framework
Washington,
October 28, 2021
Washington, D.C. - Today, House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerrold Nadler (D-NY) issued the following statement on the immigration provisions in President Biden’s Build Back Better framework: “After decades of inaction, the immigration provisions included in President Biden’s Build Back Better framework will provide a vital investment in human infrastructure that reflects our commitment to a stronger U.S. economy and a vibrant future for all Americans. Our immigrant workforce has played an essential role in our society, especially throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, and we cannot fully recover our economy without their contributions. With this framework, Congress is taking a key step forward in our effort to modernize our immigration system, and there is no doubt that our country will benefit from the resulting economic gains for decades to come. “The immigration provisions in the Build Back Better framework include advancing the registry date, a move last championed by President Ronald Reagan, to allow those who have lived and worked in service to our communities for more than 11 years an opportunity to apply for permanent residence. Additional funding to restore the availability of immigrant visas and reduce the green card backlog will accelerate the ability of family-based immigrants to contribute to their communities and ensure U.S. companies will be better positioned to attract and retain highly skilled workers. I am grateful to President Biden for his commitment to prioritizing meaningful, and historically bipartisan, immigration reform measures, and I want to thank Immigration and Citizenship Subcommittee Chair Lofgren, Senate Judiciary Committee Chair Durbin, Speaker Pelosi, and Majority Leader Schumer for their work on these provisions within the reconciliation package. We must take advantage of this historic opportunity to invest in our nation and live up to our highest ideals.” |
