Chairman Nadler Statement on District Court Ruling Blocking Enforcement of Texas Law SB 8
Washington,
October 7, 2021
Washington, D.C. - Today, House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerrold Nadler (D-NY) issued the following statement after the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Texas granted the Department of Justice’s request for a preliminary injunction blocking enforcement of Texas’ law SB 8: "This injunction is an important first step in protecting the constitutional right to access an abortion. As Judge Pitman said, since this offensive law went into effect, countless patients across the state have been unlawfully prevented from exercising control over their own lives. I applaud Attorney General Garland for heeding House Judiciary Democrats’ call to use the full force of the DOJ to halt this unconstitutional law. Sadly, the threat to reproductive freedoms still remains as more states begin to enact similarly pernicious laws. We will remain vigilant and continue to work with the Department to protect the legal right to access an abortion.” |
