Washington, D.C. - Today, House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerrold Nadler (D-NY) issued the following statement after Attorney General Garland announced that the Department of Justice will sue Texas to block enforcement of SB 8:

“I applaud Attorney General Garland, Deputy Attorney General Monaco, and Associate Attorney General Gupta for taking forceful action to protect the constitutional right to access an abortion. SB 8 is flagrantly unconstitutional and clearly violates decades of Supreme Court precedent. Judiciary Democrats made clear to the Attorney General earlier this week that the Department can and must use its full force to combat this insidious effort. The action taken by the Department today sends a strong message to other states preparing to enact similarly dangerous laws. We look forward to continuing our work with the Department to safeguard reproductive freedoms for all.”
 
On Tuesday, September 7th, House Judiciary Democrats sent a letter to Attorney General Garland urging him to use the full force of the Department of Justice to defend the constitutional right to access an abortion.
