Washington, D.C. - Today, House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerrold Nadler (D-NY) issued the following statement after the Department of Justice announced new guidance restricting the federal government's ability to secretly obtain journalists' communications:

"Given recent reports about the Department’s surveillance of journalists and Members of Congress, these are not the only policy changes I would like to see at the Department of Justice—but I am genuinely encouraged by this significant step in the right direction.  I look forward to working with the Attorney General to make certain that these changes are codified and remain the policy of the Department for years to come.  As I said in our June 30th hearing on the subject, the surveillance practices of the Department of Justice will remain a focus of this Committee in the coming months."
