Washington, March 3, 2021

Washington, D.C. – Today, House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerrold Nadler (D-NY) announced that the following Members of Congress will serve as Vice Chair for the House Judiciary Committee and its Subcommittees:

  • Madeleine Dean (D-PA), Vice Chair, Full Committee
    • Rep. Dean was elected to Congress in 2018 to represent the 4th Congressional District of Pennsylvania, which includes Montgomery and Berks counties located in suburban Philadelphia. A former professor and lawyer, Rep. Dean is an outspoken advocate for equal rights, criminal justice reform, and ending gun violence. Recently, she served as an impeachment manager during the second impeachment of Donald Trump.
  • Pramila Jayapal (D-WA), Vice Chair, Subcommittee on Antitrust, Commercial, and Administrative Law
    • As a former Washington State Senator and a lifelong organizer for immigrant, civil, worker, and human rights, Rep. Jayapal was first elected to Congress in 2016 when she became the first South Asian American woman to serve in the House. She is currently one of only 14 immigrants in Congress. As the Chair of the Congressional Progressive Caucus and a leader who helped conduct America's first major congressional antitrust investigation in decades, she has aggressively challenged self-regulation by BigTech, worked to hold dominant tech platforms accountable, and pushed to rein in anti-competitive behavior and monopolistic practices so innovation can thrive.
  • Deborah Ross (D-NC), Vice Chair, Subcommittee on Constitution, Civil Rights, and Civil Liberties
    • Rep. Ross represents the 2nd District of North Carolina. She has been an attorney for more than 30 years. She chaired the Judiciary Committee in the NC House of Representatives. Rep. Ross helped pass the South’s first anti-racial profiling law, a DNA innocence law, and juvenile justice reform in North Carolina.
  • MondaireJones (D-NY), Vice Chair, Subcommittee on Courts, Intellectual Property, and the Internet
    • Elected in 2020, Rep. Jones is a lawyer, nonprofit leader, and activist, representing New York’s 17th Congressional District. He is the first openly gay, Black Member of Congress.
  • Cori Bush (D-MO), Vice Chair, Subcommittee on Crime, Terrorism, and Homeland Security
    • Congresswoman Cori Bush is a registered nurse, community activist out of the Ferguson Uprising, organizer, single mother, and ordained pastor for the people of St. Louis. She is the first Black woman and first nurse to represent Missouri, the first woman to represent Missouri’s 1st Congressional District, and the first activist from the movement fighting for Black lives elected to the United States Congress.
  • Joe Neguse (D-CO), Vice Chair, Subcommittee on Immigration and Citizenship
    • Rep. Neguse was elected to his first term in November 2018, becoming the first African-American member of Congress in Colorado history. As the son of African immigrants, he has lent his story and his parents story to efforts to pass the Dream and Promise Act and the No Ban Act, which would repeal the Trump Administration’s travel bans. As Co-Chair of the Bipartisan Refugee Caucus, he has championed efforts to support U.S. refugee resettlement and ensure America remains a leader in this regard.

House Judiciary Committee Chairman Nadler (D-NY) released the following statement:

“I am proud to announce the Vice Chairs for the House Judiciary Committee and its Subcommittees for the 117th Congress. Our Committee has hit the ground running to address the important and complex issues facing this country. I believe that our Vice Chairs have already embodied the leadership needed to face the challenges before this Committee and know that they will continue to do so while working with our Subcommittee Chairs in their new roles. I look forward to continuing to work with the members of this Committee this Congress.”
