NADLER & CUMMINGS CALL FOR DOJ IG INVESTIGATION INTO DOL SECRETARY ACOSTA’S HANDLING OF CHILD SEX ABUSE CASE

Washington, DC, December 14, 2018

Rep. Jerrold Nadler, the Ranking Member of the Committee on the Judiciary, and Rep. Elijah E. Cummings, the Ranking Member of the Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, released a joint statement calling for the Department of Justice Inspector General to investigate Department of Labor Secretary Alexander Acosta’s handling of a child sex abuse case during his time as U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Florida:

“We believe the Department of Justice Inspector General should investigate Mr. Acosta’s handling of a child sex trafficking case during his tenure as U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Florida.  It is difficult to understand how such a depraved series of crimes against so many young girls could receive such a light slap on the wrist.  It is critical to ensure that Mr. Acosta did not abuse his prosecutorial discretion, violate the notification requirements under the Crime Victims’ Rights Act, or otherwise breach DOJ rules and regulations in his handling of that case.  We recognize that the Deputy Attorney General must authorize this investigation, and we ask that he do so immediately.”
