Washington, D.C. – Today, Rep. Jerrold Nadler, Chairman of the Committee on the Judiciary and Rep. Zoe Lofgren, most recent Chair of the Subcommittee on Immigration and Citizenship* issued the following statement applauding President Biden’s day one actions on immigration, including his bold vision for immigration reform and executive actions that repeal Trump’s Muslim Ban, interior enforcement order, and exclusion of undocumented immigrants from the census, halt construction of the border wall, and preserve protections for DACA recipients and certain Liberian nationals: “In taking these actions and releasing a legislative proposal on the first day of his presidency, President Biden has declared to the world his intent to return America to its roots and restore its reputation as an inclusive and welcoming nation. Over the course of his administration, President Trump imposed unimaginable hardships on families and restricted economic growth through the implementation of hundreds of xenophobic policies, many of which were fortunately struck down as unlawful by the courts.” “It will take a consistent and focused effort by Congress and the new administration to build back a stronger more vibrant nation. We look forward to more bold actions from the president in the coming days and stand ready to work with him to reverse the damage done by the Trump administration and enact much-needed legislative reforms.” *The Committee on the Judiciary’s Subcommittees have not yet been organized for the 117th Congress. |
