Congressman John Conyers Jr. (MI-13.), Ranking Member of the House Judiciary Committee, issued the following statement in opposition to the Trump Administration’s so-called immigration priorities:

The Trump Administration’s statement of priorities on immigration cannot be seen as serious or credible in any respect. These recommendations constitute an outright betrayal of American principles and our heritage as a Nation of immigrants.

They are pathetic, ugly, and would have the effect of massively reducing legal immigration in the United States. This includes preventing family reunification, which has been the bedrock of our immigration system for generations.

Most of the proposals are simply a rehash of extreme legislation that has previously failed under opposition by Members from both parties. These proposals demonstrate that President Trump is not serious about finding workable solutions to our nation’s biggest challenges.
