Chairman Nadler Statement on the Passing of Aimee Stephens

Washington, May 13, 2020

Washington, D.C. – Today, House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerrold Nadler (D-NY) released the following statement in response to the passing of Aimee Stephens, plaintiff in R.G. & G.R. Harris Funeral v. EEOC and Aimee Stephens, a Supreme Court case where the Court is expected to rule on whether Title VII of the Civil Rights Act prohibits gender identity discrimination in employment:

"I am deeply saddened by the passing of Aimee Stephens, the first transgender person to have their civil rights case heard by the Supreme Court. Aimee was an advocate for justice. Her willingness to be her authentic self, share her story of discrimination with the nation, and fight back in court has made her a hero in the fight for transgender equality. She exemplified what it means to fight for our nation’s promise of equality for all. We share our condolences to her wife, daughter, extended family, and friends and commit to honoring her memory by never stopping to fight for justice and equality for the transgender community."
