Chairman Nadler Applauds Court Decision Halting Remain in Mexico Policy

Washington, February 28, 2020

Washington, D.C. – In response to today’s decision by the Ninth Circuit to halt the Trump Administration’s Migrant Protection Protocols, also known as “Remain in Mexico,” House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerrold Nadler (D-NY) issued the following statement:

“From day one, I have said that the 'Remain in Mexico' program is morally wrong, illegal, and a flagrant violation of immigrants’ due process rights. The policy has placed nearly 60,000 asylum seekers, including families with young children, in grave danger. It also contradicts the clear language of the Immigration and Nationality Act, which prohibits the return of certain asylum seekers to a contiguous territory, and violates the United States’ treaty-based obligation to not return noncitizens to countries where their life or liberty would be threatened.

"The federal judiciary has once again reminded this Administration that it cannot unilaterally rewrite our nation’s immigration laws.I applaud the Court’s decision today as a victory for the rule of law."
