Today, House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerrold Nadler (D-NY) released the following statement regarding the announcement that Register of Copyrights Karyn A. Temple will be leaving the Copyright Office:
“I thank Karyn A. Temple for serving as the 13th Register of Copyrights and for her years of public service preceding that. Ms. Temple has ably led the Copyright Office during a period where the copyright system has faced the challenges of adapting to the ever-evolving creative community and changing technological landscape. Ms. Temple played a valuable role in helping Congress to navigate these issues, such as providing insightful feedback on the recently-passed Music Modernization Act during its passage and then overseeing its implementation this year under tight deadlines. As the first African-American head of the Copyright Office, Ms. Temple has also excelled in a field where there still is not adequate representation of minorities, and I believe her leadership has represented an important step in ensuring that all parts of the federal government reflect the diversity of this country. I wish Ms. Temple the best as she moves on to the next chapter in her career.”
“The Librarian of Congress has indicated that she will work with Members of Congress in selecting the Copyright Office’s new leadership after Ms. Temple’s departure. I look forward to working with the Librarian to ensure that the next Register is an advocate of a copyright system that will enable the creative community to earn a fair reward for the music, art, literature, and other works that enrich the lives of us all.”
