House Judiciary Announces Subcommittee Hearing on the Sprint & T-Mobile Merger

Washington, DC, February 7, 2019

Today, the House Judiciary Committee announced that the Subcommittee on Antitrust, Commercial and Administrative Law will hold a hearing on competition in the wireless market on February 14, 2019 at 10:00 a.m. in 2141 Rayburn House Office Building. This hearing will provide an opportunity for the Antitrust Subcommittee to examine the potential impact of the proposed merger of Sprint and T-Mobile on consumers, workers, and the Internet. This will be the first hearing in the Antitrust Subcommittee during the 116th Congress.

T-Mobile CEO John Legere and Sprint Executive Chairman Marcelo Claure have both agreed to testify.

House Judiciary Chairman Jerrold Nadler (D-NY) and Subcommittee on Antitrust, Commercial and Administrative Law Chairman David N. Cicilline (D-RI) released the following joint statement:

“A merger between Sprint and T-Mobile would impact the competitive landscape for wireless services. Americans deserve to know how this transaction will impact their lives, communities, and the future of high-speed wireless internet deployment and adoption. We look forward to hearing what the effect of the proposed merger will be on jobs, innovation and competition from a diverse perspective of witnesses, including the Chairmen of these companies.”

House Judiciary Ranking Member Doug Collins (R-Ga.) and Subcommittee on Antitrust, Commercial and Administrative Ranking Member Jim Sensenbrenner (R-Wis.) released the following joint statement:

“A Sprint and T-Mobile merger has the potential to greatly impact Americans across the country in terms of wireless services, jobs, and broadband. This hearing opens the door for the American people and Congress to hear directly from the leaders of both companies and learn whether this agreement is in the best interest of the American people.” 

Due to a change in scheduling, this will no longer be a joint hearing with the Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Communications and Technology.
