Nadler & Cummings Call Out House GOP for Their Latest Attempt to Distract from the Russia Investigation & Discredit the FBI
Washington, DC,
December 20, 2017
Today, Rep. Jerrold Nadler (D-NY), the Ranking Member of the House Committee on the Judiciary and Rep. Elijah E. Cummings (D-MD), the Ranking Member of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, released statements after House Judiciary Committee Chairman Bob Goodlatte (R-Va.) and House Oversight and Government Reform Committee Chairman Trey Gowdy (R-S.C.) requested emergency interviews this week with FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe, FBI Chief of Staff Jim Rybicki, and FBI counsel Lisa Page, in a desperate attempt to distract from the Russia investigation and discredit the FBI. House Judiciary Committee Ranking Member Jerrold Nadler released the following statement: “These emergency interviews demonstrate that the Republicans are desperate to undermine the credibility of the FBI and the Special Counsel’s investigation. They have been scheduled with less than 48 hours’ notice, weeks before the relevant documents are due to the committees, and while the Justice Department Inspector General is in the midst of its own investigation. Instead of investigating allegations of obstruction of justice at the White House, or the ongoing threat of foreign interference in our elections, the Republicans would rather continue their obsession with attacking President Trump’s political opponents.”
House Oversight and Government Reform Committee Ranking Member Elijah E. Cummings released the following statement: “Republicans are terrified that Special Counsel Mueller is getting closer to the truth, and they are desperate to grind his investigation to a halt—even if they undermine the foundations of our democracy. Republicans are rushing to demand documents and hold emergency interviews about Hillary Clinton, but they won’t ask the White House for even a single scrap of paper about Michael Flynn—President Trump’s right hand man who pleaded guilty to lying to the FBI about the Russians. If Republicans continue on this misguided course, they will face a stark reckoning the next time the American people choose who they want in Congress conducting oversight of the Trump Administration.”
It’s unclear why Chairman Gowdy is requesting to interview McCabe yet again when he spent all afternoon yesterday asking him all of these questions before the Intelligence Committee. |
