Conyers: Women and Hispanic Farmer Settlement Restores Confidence in USDA

Washington, DC, March 2, 2011

Today, House Judiciary Committee Ranking Member John Conyers, Jr. (D-Mich.) released the following statement after the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Secretary Tom Vilsack announced plans to settle the discrimination claims of women and Hispanic farmers and ranchers against the USDA.

“The voluntary claims process announced today by the USDA is a welcome step toward resolving claims of discrimination by Hispanic and women farmers,” said Conyers.  “Building on the earlier settlements of Pigford and Keepseagle, the Administration has put USDA on a solid course toward restoring public confidence in the agency.  As we move forward, I hope that the administration continues to take steps that will change the culture in parts of USDA that continue to be a source of objection for minority farmers.”
