Today, House Judiciary Committee Ranking Member John Conyers, Jr. (D-Mich.) called H.R. 2497, the "Hinder the Administration's Legalization Temptation Act", which would suspend the authority of the Executive Branch to use current immigration law to grant or extend certain forms of immigration relief in order to prevent it from granting “backdoor amnesty”, an attack on President Obama and legal immigrants that ignores his Administration’s record of immigration enforcement.

“This is not an attack on the Presidency, but on the President himself,” said Conyers.  “I could speak about how offensive this is, but I want to focus instead on how ridiculous it is.  Because the basic premise of the bill-that President Obama cannot be trusted to enforce our immigration laws-is just plain false.

“In the first two fiscal years under President Obama, the Department of Homeland Security deported more than 779,000 people.  This is an 18% increase over President Bush's last two years in office.  Additionally, under President Obama, DHS has expanded its Secure Communities Program, entered into more agreements with local and state law enforcement officials to enforce immigration laws, and more than doubled the number of worksite enforcement investigations.”
