Nadler and Collins Laud Passage of Bipartisan Immigration Fix for Children of Military and Civil Servants

Washington, December 3, 2019

Washington, D.C. – Today, House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerrold Nadler (D-NY) and Ranking Member Doug Collins (R-GA) praised the House passage of H.R. 4803, theCitizenship for Children of Military Members and Civil Servants Act, bipartisan legislationintroduced by the Chairman and the Ranking Member that fixes a problem in current citizenship laws thatmakes it difficult for children born abroad—and who are residing abroad because of a parent’s service commitment—to establish residency for purposes of acquiring U.S. citizenship. The bill wouldease those requirements, eliminate bureaucratic red tape, and provide peace of mind to those who have dedicated their careers to serving our country in the U.S. armed forces or in other federal government positions.

“I was proud to stand in solidarity today with my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to pass H.R. 4803, the Citizenship for Children of Military Members and Civil Servants Act,” saidChairman Jerrold Nadler (D-NY). “The bill’s impact on those who will benefit from it cannot be understated. With today’s passage of H.R. 4803, the House has demonstrated its commitment to ensure that those who make sacrifices in service to our country are able to fulfill their duties without unnecessary burdens or distractions.I urge the Senate to follow suit and swiftly pass this legislation.”

“Men and women who are serving our country overseas as part of the military or as civil servants should not have any doubts about their children's citizenship. To give these parents peace of mind, I introduced the Citizenship for Children of Military Members and Civil Servants Act with Chairman Nadler. This bipartisan bill would ensure that these children receive automatic citizenship. I encourage the Senate to pass this bill and send it to the president’s desk. American families bravely serving our country abroad shouldn’t have to fight through piles of bureaucracy to ensure their children are rightfully considered American citizens,”said Ranking Member Doug Collins (R-GA).
