Earlier today, the Department of Justice’s Office of the Inspector General released a report entitled “Review of the Operations of the Voting Section of the Civil Rights Division.”  The report examines the Voting Section’s enforcement of federal voting rights laws from 2001 to 2012. Following the release of the report, Congressman John Conyers, Jr. (D-Mich.) issued this statement:

“The inspector general’s report confirms that under the leadership of the Obama administration - and particularly under the leadership of Assistant Attorney General Tom Perez - the Voting Section has been restored to evenhanded enforcement of the law and the highest standards of professionalism.

“It is important to note that the baseless accusations at the core of this report have been, yet again, thoroughly debunked.  In this era of budget cuts and increasingly scarce resources, after multiple investigations into these matters, I hope that we can end the misdirection of time and money into chasing unfounded allegations and allow the Voting Section to devote its full attention to the important work of enforcing the nation’s voting laws.”
