Nadler Announces that Rep. Lucy McBath Will Serve as the Ranking Member of the Subcommittee on Crime

Washington, July 30, 2024

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, House Judiciary Committee Ranking Member Jerrold Nadler (D-NY) announced that Representative Lucy McBath (D-GA) will act as the Ranking Member of the Subcommittee on Crime after the passing of Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee (D-TX).

“There is no Member better positioned to build on the legacy left by our late colleague, Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee,” said Ranking Member Nadler. “Lucy McBath has been a dedicated Member of the Judiciary Committee from her first day in office, quickly becoming one of the strongest voices in the House for gun violence prevention. She was instrumental in the fight to include red flag laws in the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act, the first gun safety legislation signed into law in over 30 years. Most recently, Lucy was successful in getting her bill, the Federal Prison Oversight Act, to President Biden’s desk to establish new protections for those incarcerated and prison staff to bring an end to the human rights crisis within the United States’ prisons. I look forward to my continued partnership with Lucy as she steps into this new role on the House Judiciary Committee.”

“As a mother who stood up for her son's legacy after he was gunned down, I never imagined I’d have the opportunity to serve my community in Congress,” said. Rep. Lucy McBath. “Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee’s voice can never be replaced. It is my honor to take up her vision and serve as Ranking Member of this subcommittee. We will all strive to continue the fierce advocacy she demonstrated each day.”

“I want to thank Representative Lucy McBath for her dedicated service and her willingness to lead the House Judiciary Subcommittee on Crime and Federal Government Surveillance at such a critical time. I have no doubt she will utilize her years of advocacy to continue to bolster public safety and build safer communities across the country,” said Assistant Democratic Leader Joe Neguse. “As the now most senior member of the Subcommittee on Crime, Ranking Member McBath will continue to lead House Democrats efforts to tackle this country’s gun violence epidemic, invest in community safety, and ensure a fair and equal justice system for all Americans.”
